In the last month I have worked on three separate PC's that did not have a backup solution in place. All three lost some or all data. How sad.

Let me get on my soap box a little and lets discuss backups. There are basically 3 types right now; tape, hard drive, and online. What do you get with each?

Tape backups have been around for a very long time. They are tried and true. They are easy to use and in some cases expensive. The draw backs are they require someone to change them on a consistent bases and they are a sensitive to heat and cold so they have the chance of going bad. These backups are used by both businesses and personal solutions. They have been in the business market for years and they are used heavily to this day.

Hard drive backups have come on the scene over the last couple years as hard drive costs have gone down and that their space has gone up. They have the ability to backup huge amounts of data. And for the most part they are much faster to backup to than tape. They are like tapes that they are sensitive to temperature so they can go bad too. Also, just like tapes they require someone to change them out. This human element is not always the best solution. I have seen this solution being used in small businesses but mostly this has been in the home market.

Online backups have really come into their own in the last year or two. They offer some things that tape and hard drive backups cannot. The strengths of online backups is that they can be scheduled to run several different ways so the human element is removed from the day to day operation of your backup. Depending on what service you have chosen they can be mirrored in different data centers allowing for better data protection. The draw back is that they are limited by your upload speed. Depending on how much data you need backed up this can take too long to make it feasible for you business. But if you have time to allow a initial backup, which can take days to weeks even, this is a great solution.

If you are a home user and you are not backing up you can get 2Gb of FREE backups here.

But the bottom line is what ever way you choose to backup you need to BACKUP! With a little research you can pick one that works for your business and you can be confident that your data is safe.
